Obtaining a special permit for navigation on maritime characteristic inland waterways

This special permit is required for the operation of a vessel or convoy on an inland waterway or waterway section with maritime characteristic. The Boatmaster or the person who has fulfilled the conditions required for the issuance of the EU Boatmaster certificate may take the Maritime characteristic exam organized by the Examination Centre in order to prove the existence of the professional competencies and abilities required for obtaining this special permit.

The exam subjects and topics of the qualifying exam are as follows:

1. Theoretical knowledge of maritime navigation (test exam)
2. Knowledge of maritime navigation (oral exam)

To apply for the exam, in addition to submitting the completed and signed application form, the following conditions must be certified:

  • Proof of identity,
  • EU Boatmaster qualification registered in ECDB (European Crew Data Base),
  • medical fitness,
  • Payment of the exam fee.

After the successful completion of the exam, the Examination will issue a boatman's certificate upon request, which will be entered as M (navigation on Maritime characteristic on inland waterways) in the coded individual permits section.
