European Union Boatman
With the Eu Boatman qualification candidate can fulfill Boatman position on all inland waterway vessels whose ship certificate includes the title of boatman in the section determining the composition of the crew.
Minimum requirements for obtaining the Eu Boatman qualification:
- at least 17 years of age, and
- fulfilled 2 years of approved EU Boatman course and have at least 90 days of sailing time, or
- at least 18 years of age, and
- has participated in a qualifying exam organised by the Examination Centre or a training institute with an approved training programme and
- has at least 360 days of sailing time, or
- have at least 180 days of sailing time and can prove at least 250 days during which the applicant has gained work experience on board a seagoing vessel as a member of the deck crew, or
- has completed an approved training programme approved by the shipping authority for a duration of at least nine months, and have at least 90 sailing days and
- have at least five years' work experience prior to applying for an approved training programme, or
- have gained at least 500 days of work experience on board a seagoing vessel as a member of the deck crew prior to applying for the training programme, or
- have completed a vocational training programme of at least three years before applying for an approved training programme.

At the sailor exam conducted by the Examination Centre, the competencies and abilities of the boatman are checked on theoretical and practical exams.
Requirements for applying for the exam conducted by the Examination Centre:
- Identity verification
- Proof of completion of the required training programme and/or the existence of the required sailing time
- Payment of the full exam fee
Exam subjects:
• Operation level theoretical exam
• Demonstration of the use of swimming skills for rescue purposes exam
• Assessment of skills on board on an unmoored vessel practical exam
• Assessment of skills on board on a stationary (berthed) vessel or using a shore facility practical exam
